B.A. Degree Program in Africana Studies
(HEGIS code 2211)

Department requirements (45 credits)


Africana Studies 0.4 and one additional introductory course. Four courses chosen from one of the groups A, B or C.

A.  History and political science: 10 through 19
B.  Literature, culture, and the arts: 20 through 29
C.  Society and the economy: 30 through 59
D.  Special topics: 60.1

Two courses from groups other than the one chosen above. One seminar or independent study course chosen from Africana Studies 70.1 through 88. Eighteen credits of advanced courses in any department plus any prerequisite of the courses. Department recommendation Students should consult a department counselor for help in planning a course of study. B.A. degree program for social studies teacher (7-12) HEGIS code 2201.01 The student-teaching sequence of courses in secondary school social studies education is described in the "Education" section in this Bulletin. Africana studies concentration for majors in the following programs: early childhood education teacher (prekindergarten-3); elementary education teacher (K-6); elementary bilingual education teacher (K-6); special education teacher. The requirements for the teacher education programs indicated above are described in the "Education" section in the College Bulletin.

Students who major in any of these programs and who elect a concentration in Africana studies must complete four of the following course options with a grade of C or higher:

1.  African background: one of the following: Africana Studies 11.2,11.4,11.5.
2.  African-American background: one of the following: Africana Studies 12.5, 12.6, 12.7
3.  Caribbean background: Africana Studies 17.3 or 174.
4.  Cultural studies: Africana Studies 23 or 23.1.
5.  Issues in society: one of the following: Africana Studies 44, 44.5, 44.6.

Requirements for a minor in Africana Studies:
A program of twelve credits of advanced electives in Africana studies; each course must be completed with a grade of C or higher. It is recommended that these twelve credits include either a seminar numbered in the 70s. or an advanced elective taken for honors credit. Division of Graduate Studies The Africana Studies Department offers graduate courses for students in other fields. For information, students should consult the department chairperson.
