Mission Statement
The Brooklyn College Department of Anthropology and Archaeology, which includes teacher-scholars in the fields of archaeology and cultural, linguistic and biological anthropology, explores the diversity, continuity and unity of humans, both past and present.
Departmental Learning Goals
In keeping with this mission, the learning goals of the department of anthropology and archaeology are:
•To be aware of the distinct and complementary contributions of archaeology and cultural, linguistic and biological anthropology to the holistic study of human beings.
•To understand the diversity, continuity and unity of humans, both past and present.
•To understand the necessity for tolerance and to appreciate individual and social diversity.
•To develop critical and analytical thinking through hands-on research.
•To understand and apply the research methodologies of archaeology and cultural, linguistic and biological anthropology.
Departmental Learning Objectives
As graduates of the department of anthropology and archaeology, students will be able to:
•Define and discuss the distinct and complementary contributions of each of the four sub-fields of the anthropology: archaeology and cultural, linguistic and biological anthropology.
•Analyze, explain, produce and respond to arguments, especially in regard to cross-cultural comparisons of human behavior.
•Explain their relationships to local, national, and global cultural inputs to identity.
•Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of biological and cultural diversity.
•Explain the ways in which cultures (their own and others’) shape their experience of the world and their ways of communicating.
•Demonstrate conceptual knowledge of other cultures and of globalization.
•Devise research questions and address them through original empirical studies.
•Explain different methods of data collection and be able to use different methods of data analysis.
