Colonial Kings County was comprised of 6 towns originally,
5 Dutch and 1 English (Gravesend).

In the colonial period and throughout the 19th century Kings County was rural, mostly farmland. At one point in the 19th century it was the 2nd largest agricultural producer in the region, second only to Queens.

Today there are only 14 remaining Dutch-American farmhouses in Brooklyn.
