30 September 2003

we started off the meeting with the following agendas:

1.) Size of the SOG (summit organizing group)
2.) SOG meeting on 10/5 (which is cancelled since this day runs on monday schedule (conversion day))
3.) the survey
4.) the website
5.) meeting with BCAN (brooklyn community action network)
6.) Structure of topics on 11/20 (for all that don't know that is the day of the summit)
7.) possible survey topics

-The SOG can't expand in size because of various problems, so we should involve others by conducting a survey of topics relating to our cause.

-Our pre-existent size is sufficient to our cause, we should spend more time on organization/networking and general knowledge among groups, besides since there are classes worth academic credits which include and require our AOD project, we have many attendants for the summit through out the day

-We can get organized groups from the student life office to distribute flyers (probably for SERVA credits)

-We must make sure to keep a list of ppl who will want to be involved or contacted about events and such

-Need conference lineage between summit participants

-Morgan proposed the possible conflicts of the summit, which include: if we invite ppl to debate we may lose our spontaneity (because ppl will be giving speeches throughout the summit, but at the same time the summit will become whatever we frame it to become, and we must make it a collective dialogue/discussion/and debate

--Menser had proposed that on the common hours (club hours 1:30-3:30) we should have lunch at various tables and have varying debates and issues discussed at each while we eat

-The open participatory debate will also develop an atmosphere for discussion, also time is on our side since it is lasting almost 12 hours

-Menser recommended that we have two concurrent workshops per session (class time period)

--the day is separated into the following classes (sessions)on Thursday (Nov. 20th)

8:00-9:15
9:20-10:40
10:50-12:05
12:15-1:30
1:30-3:30 (((((((((common hours)))))))))
3:30-4:45
4:55-6:05
6:20-8:00

-The possible discussions already mentioned were as follows (if you have any to add please respond to all):

--affordable housing

--Joel's speech on environmental economics

--CUNY and its various injustices and problems endured by students

--Jobs with justice (a group)

--globalization and democracy

--i also suggest Prof. Vitale from the sociology department, i know his knowledge of globalization is outstanding

two of these topics, or other topics introduced, should be discussed in each of the following sessions mentioned above in various orders (maybe with some repetition of some if possible)

Possible Survey Questions

1/ would you go to a democratically structured debate on a topic you we?
2/ What are your "issues": affordable housing, CUNY, budget cuts, do you vote?, apathy-nihilism
3/ can you afford to pay rent now that tuition has risen?
4/ Is the US a democracy?
5/ Should the US be militarily involved in the Middle East?
6/ Does the Brooklyn College administration give a "shit"?
7/ Have your heard of the Arts of Democracy project?
8/ Does Brooklyn College provide a quality education?
9/ What should everybody on campus be talking about?
10/ Is CUNY operated fairly?  if you replied "n", do you feel you could  participate in changing it?
11/ Rank the following issues in terms of their importance: tendency for self-segregation on campus (the cliq's issue), future of CUNY, immigration, war  on drugs, war on terror, conflicts in middle east; democracy at home; the global  economy;
