ART DEPARTMENT EVENTS

Workshops
Each semester the department hosts one or two career workshops on topics such as getting internships, getting into graduate school or how to photograph your portfolio. Panel discussions on career options and discussions with alumnae who work in the art world are also organized.

Meier Bernstein Lecture Series
The Meier Bernstein Library hosts a lecture series of renowned artists, curators, critics and other art historians. The speakers often conduct individual studio visits for MFA students following their talks.

GASU Visiting Artist Lecture Series
The Graduate Student Association also sponsors one or two visiting artists per semester who speak about their work and visit MFA studios. These artists are major figures in the contemporary art world with current shows in New York City. Recent visiting artists have included art world luminaries such as Kara Walker and Shahzia Sikander.

Art Department Essay Contest
The Art Department hosts an essay contest for the best graduate and undergraduate review of the MFA open studio shows, held each November. Any student may enter a review after attending the open studios. The Art History faculty judges the essays and a cash prize is awarded to the winners.

Museum and Gallery Tours
A few times a year art history faculty members will host a tour of a current exhibition in New York, a walk through contemporary art galleries, or an architectural walking tour of the city for interested students. Past tours have included: The Pantheon in New York City: Neo-classical Architecture of the City, Byzantine Art at the Metropolitan Museum, and tours of galleries in Chelsea.
Upcoming tour for our Masters of Art History students: See the workings of a bronze foundry and learn more about casting, April 2006, hosted by Professor Mona Hadler.

Teaching Assistant Program for Masters of Art History Students
Each semester MA students may apply to be a teaching assistant in the Core 2.1 Introduction to Art course, for a stipend. TA’s work closely with a faculty member on all aspects of the course from student advising and grading, to designing tests. Some lecturing experience can also be gained.

Internships
Undergraduate and graduate students can get course credit for internships in museums, galleries and other arts organizations around the city to gain valuable work experience. Brooklyn's Magner Career Center also offers a limited number of stipends for students doing unpaid internships. Past students have worked at such places as The International Center of Photography and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
