The sculpture program offers a sequence of introductory and advanced courses that lead from the fundamental principles of two-dimensional to a variety of experiences with specific sculptural media.
The resulting integration of the conceptual - ideas and forms - with a firm technical grounding in the nature of material and use of tools leads to immersion in a total artistic experience.
The range of materials offered - clay, wood, stone, and metal - combined with a knowledge of practices, such as carving, casting, mold-making, woodworking, and welding, empower students to carry their experiments with form in many directions.
We are in the process of introducing an Arts in Industry program in conjunction with art-related business in the community. Some of our students are working with a commercial foundry, casting their works in bronze. Participation in community-outreach opportunities in public art projects in the New York City area are also encouraged.
On campus, the three sculpture studios are accessible daily. A member of the sculpture faculty is available to answer technical questions and assist the students both in their course assignments and in any projects beyond the classroom they undertake. In order to maintain our quality studios, students are encouraged to follow Sculpture Studio Rules.
In addition, we support and encourage the emerging professional artist by making full use of the opportunities available in and around New York.
