Senior Recruitment
What
is the Senior Recruiting Program?
The Senior Recruiting Program (SR) offered by The Center for Career Development
and Internships of Brooklyn College is designed to assist students with
their career search through assistance with resume writing, resume critique,
interviewing skills development and job search planning and implementation.
It consists of a series of required and optional workshops and then offers
three distinct components to introduce students to employers in the public,
private and governmental sectors.
On-Campus Recruiting Program
The first of these components is the On-Campus Recruiting Program. In this
program, employers send representatives to campus to recruit students for
upcoming position openings. They may do their recruiting through one-to-one
interviewing, through group recruiting presentations, or through group interviews.
To participate in On-Campus Recruiting, students must attend all required
workshops, have a resume approved by a career counselor, and then ask that
their resume be submitted to those specific employers where they wish to
be considered for openings. The vast majority of employers that recruit
through the On-Campus Recruiting Program pre-select those students that
they wish to interview. Those candidates "pre-selected" by an employer must
then sign up for an interview time slot.
The On-Campus Recruiting Program requires
participants to inform themselves regarding scheduled employers, their
requirements (GPA, citizenship, etc.), job responsibilities, salaries
and benefits. In addition, it is the candidates' responsibility to ascertain
whether or not they have been pre-selected, and to schedule an interview
appointment. (Exceptions occur when an employer prefers open interviews,
meaning the employer seeks to interview all candidates appearing on the
scheduled day, without necessarily requiring resumes or registration in
advance.)
Off-Campus
Recruiting Program
Some recruiters do not interview on campus but have a special interest in
recruiting Brooklyn College students. With the advent of the internet and
online applications, we have put together a list of these off-campus recruiters
with active hyperlinks. By following the hyperlinks, students can check
current job openings and submit resumes electronically to these employers.
Each semester a large number of students receive and accept job offers by
using this system. You may request a copy of the off-campus recruiter list
with active hyperlinks by sending an email to: Fbalsam@brooklyn.cuny.edu.
Job
Fairs
Each semester the SR program runs a Job Fair that features recruiters hosting
tables in SUBO. Typically 50 - 60 employers will participate where they
will collect resumes of interested students, disseminate information on
career openings, and meet with applicants. In addition, information on other
job fairs open to Brooklyn College students will be posted on the SR Bulletin
Board and sent out through the Listserv. The SR program also co-sponsors
the Brooklyn - Staten Island Collegiate Job Fair and the CUNY Big Apple
Job Fair, both held every spring. Job fairs can be a very good way for students
to apply to and interview with a large number of employers in a short period
of time.
Listserv
In an effort to communicate program information, date changes, recruiter
additions and cancellations, etc., the Senior Recruitment program has set
up a listserv. A listserv uses email to broadcast information to the subscribers
of the listserv. Senior Recruitment students should subscribe to the listserv
and can do so by sending an email to: majordomo@brooklyn.cuny.edu.
In the text message, type: Subscribe bc-recruit-l. (Please note that the
letter after the hyphen in recruit is a lower case "L".)
