Break-out Groups

Among the responsibilities of educators is to communicate clearly the expectations of the community both in terms of academic performance and respect of common norms. We are also often called upon to give advice to our students from how to study to how to manage their priorities.

The breakout groups will discuss possible responses to scenarios related to personal conduct and academic expectations.

The discussion should also include the ethical responsibilities of the faculty to be role models in the implementation of standards.

1. Help students with time management and semester planning (see 24/7 chart.)

• Communicate effectively the performance/proficiency standards for your courses.

• What is a reasonable (reading) assignment in your discipline?

• How many weekly hours of out-of-classroom work should the average student work for your class? Is it reasonable? Is it realistic?

2.  Classroom management

• Personal conduct: attendance, lateness, cell phones, email, ipod

• Non-compliance with standard norms (non-participation, disruptive behavior, lack of preparation, students who don’t do the reading, missed deadlines, missed quizzes/tests)

• Cultural differences in definitions of academic integrity. How to design plagiarism-proof assignments.

3.  Controversial issues.

• Managing diversity of cultural, social, economic, political and religious norms.
