THE SKENE (LATE FOURTH CENTURY)

This image is reproduced here with the kind permission of Animagic.

Here we see another computer-generated drawing of the Theater of Dionysus in the middle of the first century AD.  We see the orchestra and the skene from the theatron.  In the late fourth century the skene became a two-story building to which a one story platform was added called a proskenion (‘in front of the skene'). Actors were moved up to the top of this platform, where they performed their roles, but now there was no longer easy communication between actors and chorus typical of earlier drama.  In any case, by this time, the role of the chorus in drama had been drastically reduced.
