EXAMS, QUIZZES, AND PAPERS

Exams:  midterm (30%) and a final exam (30%). Quizzes: at least one quiz a week on the reading for that day's class (10%).  Early in the semester there will be a diagnostic paper that will be given a grade but will not count in your final average. Two papers of 1,000 to 1,500 words will be assigned (average of two papers = 30%).  Deadlines are October 12 (first paper) and November 30 (second paper).

For help in writing a Core 1 paper see your instructor's advice in the Study Guide.

ABSENCE AND LATENESS POLICY

You are allowed three absences without penalty. These should be enough to cover incidences of sickness or other emergencies. Excessive absences and/or latenesses will be penalized at the discretion of the instructor. The usual penalty is the loss of one level on your final grade (e.g., A > A-).  N.B. You are responsible for everything said and done in each class, whether you are present or not. So if you must be absent, be sure to find out what was done in the class you missed and the assignment for the next class by calling me or a fellow student. My office is 2408B and my phone number is 951-51912 (office hours: by appointment). My e-mail address is rdunkle@brooklyn.cuny.edu (college) and rdunkle@erols.com (home).

 EXTRA-CREDIT ASSIGNMENT

If performed satisfactorily, this extra-credit assignment will raise your final grade one level (e.g., B+ > A-). You are required to post on this course's Caucus Conference page at least one comment (a paragraph long, i.e., more than one sentence) on an assigned topic related to your reading for the next class. Your comment can be a response to what someone else has written.  You may also ask questions about things you don't understand. The deadline for posting these questions is 10:00 PM on Mondays and ednesdays.  You are allowed to miss two postings; missing the third posting will disqualify you for the extra-credit.

To access the Caucus site, click http://caucus.brooklyn.cuny.edu/~caucus/caucus.html. Follow the directions for registering and accessing the page (Honors Core1 F99).  If you can't figure out how to do it, I will show you on my computer in my office.
