This is an atrium in a house in Pompeii, where the disastrous eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD has preserved Roman houses in comparatively good condition. Note the square opening in the ceiling (compluvium) and the shallow basin (impluvium) underneath in the pavement of the floor.
