Undergraduate Multicultural Courses

Preface

The Curriculum Guide to Multicultural Studies was developed by the Center for Diversity & Multicultural Studies.
Interest in multicultural courses has grown dramatically over the past decade.  This interest is driven by new demographics trends in the United States, an increasingly complex multicultural society.  Much of the new scholarships in the humanities and social sciences is both interdisciplinary and multicultural in scope and content.

The purpose of this guide is to provide students and faculty with an overview of multicultural courses at Brooklyn College.  Our intent is to foster a rich intellectual environment that is open to dynamic processes of cultural diversity in the broadest sense of the term.  We hope to move beyond notions of “tolerance” and achieve a qualitative, cross-cultural understanding and interaction among all the populations at Brooklyn College.

The courses included in this guide were selected from Brooklyn College’s Bulletins based on their connection to topics relating to cultural diversity.  Departments and programs were invited to submit course titles and descriptions for their particular areas of interest specifically courses highlighted in gender, race, ethnicity, and cross-cultural understanding were listed.  The list is not exhaustive and may not reflect changes made each semester.  For instance, language courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Haitian Creole, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish are not listed here but may be found in the Brooklyn College Bulletin.

Students should contact the particular sponsoring departments concerning scheduling, registration, and availability of courses.

This guide will be available during student registration periods and at the Academic Advisement Center, the Undergraduate Dean’s Office, the Office of the Dean for Student Life and the Center for Diversity, 3309 James Hall, as well as through the Center’s web site:  http://depthome.brooklyn.cuny.edu/diversity.
