English Teacher Degree Requirements

MA English Degree Requirements (as of Fall 2006)

Candidates for the general master's degree in English must complete 33 credits, taking nine courses in at least six of seven areas with a minimum of three courses in one area of specialization selected with the help of an advisor.

  1. Literature before 1500:ENG: 705, 706, 708, 791
  2. Literature from 1500-1800: ENG: 721, 724, 731, 751, 760, 761, 792
  3. Literature from 1800-1900: ENG: 741, 742, 749.1, 749.2, 752, 793
  4. Literature from 1900 to the present: ENG: 750, 750.9, 753.1, 753.2, 757, 763, 794
  5. Theory and Criticism: ENG: 710, 775, 775.1, 775.2, 775.3, 775.4, 778, 779, 795
  6. Language: ENG 701, 702, 702.6, 703, 703.6, 795.6.
  7. Comparative Literature: CMPLT 706.1, 707.1, 708.1 and ENG 795.7

In addition, degree candidates must take two required courses, English 700X Introduction to Literary Research and English 780X Thesis Project. Candidates must also certify their ability to read a foreign language, pass a comprehensive examination, and complete a thesis.

English Teacher Degree Requirements (as of Spring 2007)

The Master of Arts, English Teacher, meets New York City and New York State advanced licensing and certification requirements. The program includes a combination of English and education courses, totaling 30-46 credits. Early in the first term, students must have a course of study approved by both the secondary education program of the School of Education and the Department of English.

Students must complete 18 credits in courses in English as follows: (1) English 700.1X and 715X; (2) three courses in three different areas chosen from areas 1-5 and 7; (3) one of the following courses from area 6: English 701X or 702X or 702.6X or 703X or 795.6X. To complete the degree, students must pass a comprehensive written examination given by the English Department.

  2. Literature from 1500-1800: ENG: 721, 724, 731, 751, 760, 761, 792
  3. Literature from 1800-1900: ENG: 741, 742, 749.1, 749.2, 752, 793
  4. Literature from 1900 to the present: ENG: 750, 750.9, 753.1, 753.2, 757, 763, 794
  5. Theory and Criticism: ENG: 710, 775, 775.1, 775.2, 775.3, 775.4, 778, 779, 795
  6. Language: ENG: 701, 702, 702.6, 703, 705, 706, 795.6
  7. Comparative Literature: CMPLT 706.1, 707.1, 708.1 and ENG 795.7

Students must complete 12 credits in courses in the School of Education. Students take different education courses and sequences of courses depending on their previous course work, teaching experience, and the certificates they hold. Students who possess initial Certification in teaching English must complete 9 credits in Group II and 3 credits in Group III, below. Students who do not possess Initial Certification in teaching English or equivalent coursework and teaching experience or who are teaching but do not possess Initial Certification in teaching English must have the appropriate course work and credits in the subject area and must complete the appropriate courses in Group I before taking courses in Groups II and III, below. Students pursuing Initial Certification in teaching English must take ED 792.4X, Advanced Theories and Practice of Composition, in Group III. Students who already have a master's degree but wish Initial Certification in teaching English must take the appropriate courses in Group I and Group III, below, as determined at the time of matriculation by the head of adolescence education and special subjects in the School of Education.

Group I: ED 742X, ED 792.1X, ED 763.01T, ED 764.5T, ED 723.01T, ED 764.51T.

Group II: ED 742.2T, ED 722.01T, ED 724.01T.

Group III: ED 716X, ED 721.01T, ED 726.1X, ED 731.3T, ED 751.2T, ED 784.2X, ED 792.2X, ED 792.4X/ENG 779X, ED 796X/THE 741, ED 799.5X.

Students pursuing an M.A. English Teacher must have taken or must take courses that meet the New York State and NCTE English standards. Transcript review will determine what appropriate course work students must take.
