Professor Johnson is a scholar of international and U.S. political and constitutional history. He has recently completed a history of Congress and the Cold War and co-edited two volumes of the three volumes of Lyndon B. Johnson's presidential tapes. In the spring 2005 semester he was a visiting professor of history at Harvard University. He received his MA at the University of Chicago and Ph.D. from Harvard.
