Creative Music Convergence Ensemble

 

The Creative Music Convergence Ensemble is an artist-run organization that seeks to foster cross-cultural awareness and creative exchange among New York City’s diverse music communities.  Working in the space where jazz, world, and new improvised musics intersect, the group performs original works reflecting an array of hybrid styles. The ensemble of performer/composers includes tenor sax and flutist Professor Salim Washington (Brooklyn College), pianist Vijay Iyer, koto player Miya Masaoka, and saxophonists Aaron Stewart and Matana Roberts.

Uprocking at the Dollar Jam: Spinning an Alternative Record Of Hip-Hop in Brooklyn

Ethnomusicologist and vocalist Kyra D. Gaunt specializes in African American popular music and performance in the everyday with a focus on race, gender and the body.  An Associate Professor of Music at New York University, she is the recipient of fellowships from the Ford Foundation and NEH.  Professor Gaunt will be exploring the musical and social play between simultaneous “records” of hip-hop where the Bronx (on one hand) and Brooklyn (on turntable two) spin a mix of hip-hop historiography or a politics of music, representation, and place.

Leroy Jenkins: The Art of Improvisation

 

Leroy Jenkins is continually inventing his own musical language.  His is an extraordinary bonding of a variety of sounds associated with the black music tradition, while simultaneously bridging with European styles.  Mr. Jenkins is the recipient of numerous commissions from organizations such as the Brooklyn Philharmonic and Lincoln Center Out of Doors.  He is also known for his association with many fine creative musicians such as Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, and Alice Coltrane, as well as the Association for the Advancement of Creative Music (AACM).
