Beautiful Nightmare: John Coltrane, Jazz, and American Culture
Salim Washington, Assistant Professor of Music, Brooklyn College, received his Ph.D. from Harvard University with a dissertation on John Coltrane. An active tenor saxophonist, he has performed at the Jazz Gallery, the Society for Ethical Culture, and the Knitting Factory, and leads The Salim Washington Ensemble in New York.

Robin D. G. Kelley, Professor of History and Africana Studies, New York University,
and Louis Armstrong Visiting Professor, Columbia University, is the author of Yo Mama’s Disfunktional! Fighting the Culture Wars in Urban America, Race Rebels: Culture, Politics, and the Black Working Class,
and the forthcoming books Misterioso: The Art of Thelonious Monk and Freedom Dreams: Black Intellectuals and the Struggle for a New World. Professor Kelley is the 2002 Robert L. Hess Scholar in Residence at Brooklyn College.

American Art Song in the Twentieth Century
Ned Rorem, called “the world’s best composer of art songs” by Time Magazine, has composed hundreds of songs, as well as operas, symphonies, piano concerti, and chamber music. His recent song cycle Evidence of Things Not Seen was nominated for a Grammy award. The author of fourteen books including A Ned Rorem Reader, Lies: A Diary, and The Paris Diary, Rorem is the president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Memory, Instincts, and Culture: The Music of Jason Kao Hwang
Jason Kao Hwang is the composer of the chamber opera The Floating Box: A Story in Chinatown. As a violinist, he has performed with Anthony Braxton, Pauline Oliveros, and Henry Threadgill, and has recorded two CDs with his ensemble, The Far East Side Band. He composed the music for the PBS films China: Born Under the Red Flag and the forthcoming Race: The Geneaology of an Illusion.
