Pan in the 21st Century: the Scholarship and Music of Steel Drums

April 20-21, 2006

Clark Atlanta University

Atlanta, Georgia

To the average individual who has some basic familiarity with the Caribbean, the words “steel drum” conjures up images of cruise ships, smiling natives basking in the sunshine on white sandy beaches, and of carnival, with scantily clothed females gyrating to the rhythm of music made on discarded oil drums.   To the extent that these images are true, they only marginally represent the reality of

the islands and of the instrument.  “Pan in the 21st Century” is a two-day symposium directed to bring together the leading researchers of the instrument to address some of the issues underlying the steelpan, the only acoustical musical instrument invented in the 20th Century.

Submissions could focus on the history, technology, music, politics, economics, business or other area of the steelpan/steelband.  Papers accepted for presentation should demonstrate scholarly excellence in research, orientation and contribution to the body of knowledge on the steelpan/steelband. Among the invited presenters include physicists Dr. Thomas Rossing, of Northern Illinois University, Dr. Uwe Hansen of Indiana State University and Richard Achong of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad, ethnomusicologists Dr. Dawn Batson of Indiana State University and Ron Reid of Berkeley School of Music, Tufts University, Dr. Stephen Stuempfle, Chief Curator, the Historical Museum of South Florida, author of The Steelband Movement: The Forging of a National Act in Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Hollis (Mighty Chalkdust) Liverpool, Winner of the 2005 Calypso Monarch Competition in Trinidad, University of the Virgin Islands.  The Keynote Address will be given by Mr. Patrick Arnold, president of the Pantrinbago, the world governing body for steelbands.
