  BRAGA, SONIA (1950– )
Nominated for a Golden Globe award for best supporting actress for Kiss of the Spider Woman (1986), and for another for Moon Over Parador (1989), Sonia Braga has produced outstanding work in film, television and on the stage. She was born in Paraná, Brazil and as a young woman worked to support her mother and six siblings. At eighteen she appeared in the nude onstage in Hair causing a scandal, but that did not hinder her developing talent. She played lead roles in Brazilian soap operas and films, becoming an international sensation in Dona Flor e seus dois maridos. Crossing over to American films, Braga played the mother in Angel Eyes which starred another Latina performer, Jennifer López. Not afraid of taking risks, Braga played a lesbian in several episodes of Sex and the City, and an activist in The Milagro Beanfield War. In all, Braga has produced two films and appeared in more than twenty-five films and nineteen television series.
