Jaramillo
witnessed the misfortunes that befell Nuevomexicanos after the American
occupation of their land. She was born and educated in New Mexico and,
as a young woman, suffered personal tragedy, the loss of two children
and her husband. Jaramillo refocused her life on preserving New Mexican
culture. She wrote a cookbook, The Genuine New Mexico Tasty Recipes,
to counter what she perceived as deficiencies in the books produced
on the subject by Euro-Americans. She founded the Sociedad Folklórica,
and authored Cuentos del Hogar, and Shadows of the Past.
Perhaps her major contribution was Romance of a Little Village Girl,
her autobiography. In her words, “I feel that I have accomplished
one thing – preserved in writing our vanishing Spanish folk customs.”
