  LOZANO, MÓNICA CECILIA (1956– )
“If I was interested in making a difference, there was nothing more important, or at least, more accessible, than La Opinión.”

The granddaughter of the founders of the newspapers La Prensa (San Antonio 1913), and La Opinión (Los Angeles 1926), is today President and Chief Operating Officer of La Opinión. Raised and educated in California with a healthy dose of the family’s printer’s ink, Lozano, who studied political science, gained leadership experience in grass-roots organizing. Responsible for supporting several of the the newspaper’s award winning series, Lozano’s new directions for the paper included envisioning La Opinión beyond the limits of a Spanish language press. Under her guidance it has grown to become a major multi-media metropolitan daily. An influential figure on the boards of dozens of political and entrepreneurial organizations, Lozano was a trustee of the University of Southern California and a trustee for Sun America Asset Management Corporation. In 1998 Lozano was appointed to the California State Board of Education and in 2000 was elected its president.
