  MENDIETA, ANA (1948–1985)
The Cuban born artist, Ana Mendieta, is known for her innovative, multiple artistic talents, courage and vision. Although she spent much of her short life in the United States, Mendieta harkened to the female body and her Cuban roots for inspiration. Mendieta’s artistic voice was articulated through performance, earthworks, sculpture, drawing, ritualistic acts, and photographic documentation of works created on site. She evoked Santeria, silhouettes, and the trasnformative property of places and nature. Mendieta’s legacy rests on the extant remarkable groundbreaking images and performances she has left. These have already demonstrated a lasting influence on the contemporary art world.
