PHILOSOPHY 11.2: MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY
PROF. ANDREW ARLIG
SPRING 2009
In this course we will survey some of the medieval contributions to metaphysics, epistemology, political philosophy, and ethics. We will examine in considerable detail the medieval conception of scientia and its relation to the doctrines of established religion, which are revealed through prophecy. Other topics will include (1) the nature and existence of God, (2) the transcendence of God and negative theology, (3) the perfect political organization, and (4) freedom of the will and the existence of evil. We will be examining the writings of some of the best Christian, Jewish, and Islamic thinkers from the Middle Ages, including Bonaventure, Anselm, Aquinas, Maimonides, Al-Farabi, Al-Ghazali, and Averroes (Ibn Rushd).
