Fitness Tests at Brooklyn College

All tests are performed in a modern University laboratory by ACSM certified professionals.

VO2max: This test is considered by many to be the most important test of “aerobic” fitness as it measures the maximal ability of the body to use oxygen. For athletes “mode specific” tests are best. In other words, a cyclist should perform a cycling test, a runner is best tested on the treadmill, a rower on a rowing ergometer and so on. For general fitness testing a treadmill test is usually best. Maximal testing may not be appropriate for all individuals, so a sub-maximal procedure to predict VO2max is also available. Unlike tests which estimate oxygen consumption, these sub-maximal tests use actual measured oxygen consumption values to predict VO2max resulting in greatly increased accuracy. Either type of test also provides important information regarding efficiency (i.e., the amount of oxygen used to perform given amounts of exercise). $100

Ventilatory/Lactate Threshold: Non-invasive measurements of minute ventilation are combined with statistical techniques to determine the Ventilatory Threshold. This coincides with the Lactate Threshold and therefore is a key training and performance measure for the serious endurance athlete. Can be added to VO2max tests for an additional $20.

Body Composition: Using state of the art techniques percent body fat is measured in the Bod Pod. Accurate assessment of the amount of fat and lean tissue is helpful for athletes as well as any individual interested in a healthy lifestyle. $50
