The Surgeon General of the United States recently identified
physical inactivity as a major health risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer,
obesity, musculoskeletal disorders and diabetes. The increasing public
awareness of combining nutrition and physical activity to promote a healthy
lifestyle and to help prevent disease and injury has created many career
opportunities for students of Exercise Science. Exercise scientists have the
knowledge to contribute to preventative strategies for disease and injury
prevention.
The curriculum in the Exercise Science program provides students with the
knowledge and abilities that will offer a variety of career opportunities,
including positions in public and private hospitals, sports medicine
facilities, wellness programs, corporate fitness programs, colleges and
universities, learning disability centers, free standing rehabilitation
facilities and as exercise consultants. Many businesses depend on the health
and fitness of their employees and often have staff to educate and train their
employees. Personal Training consultation is not only isolated to elite
athletes there is an increase in demand for personal trainers for recreational
athletes.
The students will gain a broad background including physiology,
biomechanics, motor learning and exercise testing and prescription. This
curriculum is an optimal undergraduate degree for professional schools
including Medicine, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physician
Assistant.
