BROOKLYN COLLEGE/POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY
COORDINATED ENGINEERING DEGREE PROGRAM FACT SHEET

guaranteed
transfer criteria

financial aid

Students entering the Brooklyn College Preengineering Program (Code #0524 on the CUNY Application) are eligible for the Brooklyn College/Polytechnic Coordinated Engineering Degree Program leading to the Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Civil/Environmental Engineering. In this joint program, students who complete their Brooklyn College preengineering studies with an index of 2.5 or better in the guaranteed required math and science courses are guaranteed admission to Polytechnic University. Students who transfer criteria earn C's or better in all their course work and who take 4 to 6 credits at Polytechnic during the summer immediately prior to transfer, enter Polytechnic with junior level status in the specific corresponding Polytechnic engineering program. Upon enrollment at the Polytechnic, students from Brooklyn College financial aid are eligible to receive financial aid, based on family need and scholarship, on the same basis as any continuing Polytechnic student. The average Poly Grant or Outstanding Transfer Scholarship ranges from $5,500 to $10,000 annually (95-96 data). Currently the maximum Pell Grant and TAP awards are $2,340 and $3,900 respectively. The average Stafford Student Loan is $4,000.
2/2 program

in-phase transfer

credits counted toward
the Polytechnic Degree

The joint program is designed so that the well-prepared entering high school graduate - who takes Math 3.3 (calculus 1), Chemistry 1 ,and English 1 as a Brooklyn College lower freshman - can realistically expect to complete the preengineering component in 2 years and the Polytechnic Bachelor of Science Engineering Degree in another 2 years. In order to effect this in-phase transfer, the student is expected to take 4 or 6 credits at the Polytechnic during the summer immediately prior to transfer. All Brooklyn College preengineering courses* and all credits with the exception of 3 to 6 are transferred toward the Polytechnic Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical (Aerospace) Engineering, Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Brooklyn College/Polytechnic Program is further described in the Brooklyn College and Polytechnic Catalog.
high school preparation High school students planning to enter the program should complete Regents Chemistry, 12th year Mathematics and 12th year English while in high school. In addition, courses in Biology, Computer Science and Physics should prove useful as well. Advanced Placement credit will be given for college level courses where appropriate. AP Test scores of 4 or 5 are required. An AP score of 3 may be considered provided the appropriate Polytechnic department so recommends.
math and chemistry
prerequisites
Students whose mathematics preparation in high school is not sufficiently strong for them to take Math 3.3 (calculus 1) on entering the college, may begin their preengineering studies with Math 2.9 (pre-calculus). Students who have not successfully completed a Regents Chemistry course in high school are required to take Chemistry 1.1 as their first chemistry course at the college followed by Chemistry 1.2.
standard
preengineering
program
Brooklyn College/Polytechnic Standard Coordinated Engineering Components along with the Articulated Credit Transfer at the Polytechnic, are given on each sheet corresponding to the particular engineering discipline. The Standard Coordinated Engineering Program is designed for the very well prepared student who intends to transfer to the Polytechnic after 4 semesters at Brooklyn College. Note that semester 1 is the same for all engineering disciplines. A student who must satisfy math prerequisites or take ESL courses on entering the college should expect to take a longer time (5 or more semesters) to complete the courses listed in the program. Note that some of the equivalencies described on the various engineering program sheets are transferred in packages. Thus for example, an E.E. who completes Chemistry 1 but doesn't complete Physics 10.5 at Brooklyn will be required to take additional chemistry at Polytechnic after transfer.

*Math and Science courses with a grade of D may be transferred with appropriate departmental approval.
