During tenure as Superintendent, Alternative High Schools and Programs, Adult and Continuing Education, we achieved many successes:

Appointed as first Superintendent, Alternative High Schools and Programs
-
oversaw transition of the Superintendency from one serving exclusively drop-outs and high risk students to
"schools of choice" model, serving students of all ability levels, special education, and Limited English Proficient students, included.
-
Led expansion of Superintendency from 13 diploma-granting high schools and non-diploma-granting programs (serving 9,000
students at 45 sites) to total of 63 schools and programs (serving 45,000 and 65,000 adults at 472 sites);
-
Responsible for design, supervision, and opening of 46 State-registered, diploma-granting alternative high schools;
-
Expanded LYFE in-school day care for student mothers to 43 sites, serving more than 500 infants and toddlers on a daily basis; transitioned Schools for Pregnant Teens into full-service Program for Pregnant and Parenting Students;

In Collaboration with the Center for Collaborative Education and Coalition of Essential Schools, supervised redesign of 3 large comprehensive high schools into
"educational condominiums", with small schools, grades 7-12;

Designed innovative high schools and curricula with a wide variety of collaborators, including Fund for New York Public Education (New Visions); Center for Collaborative Education, Boys Choir of Harlem, Cooper Union, Phoenix House, Center for Educational Innovation, Outward Bound of New York City, New York Mission Society,
Hetrick-Martin Institute, Fordham University;

Designed and opened five grades 7-12 secondary schools, in collaboration with a variety of non-Board of Education entities and K-8 Community School Districts.

Increased on-campus high schools through collaboration with La Guardia Community College, Hostos Community College, Brooklyn College, and Bronx Community College;

Responsible for programs serving 3000+ homeless youth, youth in foster care and in juvenile facilities.

Expanded education for adolescents incarcerated on Rikers Island, growing from a single school for 250 students to a complex of 5 schools, serving nearly 2,000 adolescents and adults a day;

developed on-site educational programs at more than 200 drug-rehabilitation and social service agencies, serving @4,000
students each day. Collaborations include working with Phoenix House; Daytop, Inc,; J-Cap; Argosy; Covenant House; Youth DARES; Salvation Army and Good will Industries;

Expanded
GED-preparation programs to serve more than 15,000 students each day.

Managed, supervised, and allocated budgets comprising @ $750 Million/year.

Direct report and rating officer for 62 principals, central office staff of 22 professionals and non-pedagogical support.
