Mr. Phillips joined the Brooklyn College faculty in 1997 after thirty years
work in public education, as a teacher, supervisor, principal, and
superintendent. He retired from the New York City Board of Education in June,
1997, as Superintendent, Alternative High Schools and Programs, responsible for
more than 62 high schools and alternative programs with a combined enrollment of
nearly 75,000 students at some 425 sites throughout New York City.
Mr. Phillips's primary teaching responsibilities are currently in the field
of adolescence education, working with career-changers and students near
completion of their masters degrees. He coordinated the Brooklyn College
Teaching Fellows Program during the summer of 2000, collaborating with the Board
of Education and United Federation of Teachers in that effort. Mr. Phillips's
administrative efforts center on the Guidance and Counseling Program and on
coordinating the School of Education's Off-Campus Programs, operated jointly the
UFT, Jericho Teachers Association, Lynbrook Teachers Association, Westchester
BOCES, and the Long island Institute of Professional Studies.
