Program
Description
The School
of Education at Brooklyn College offers four strands for students
seeking a Master of Science in Education leading to professional
certification in Childhood Education. These options
for completing the professional certificate in Childhood Education
include three strands of specialization and a Bilingual Extension:
A minimum
scholastic index of 3.0 in graduate education and liberal
arts and sciences courses is required to maintain matriculation.
Students review their plan of study each semester with the
program head.
Liberal
Arts: The program
in Childhood Education is not only grounded in the liberal
arts and sciences, but more significantly, integrates the
disciplines with pedagogy. Several of the courses in
pedagogy are paired with courses in the liberal arts and sciences
disciplines. Our programs orientation toward schooling
and education develops students commitment to the highest
standards of academic quality in their learning and teaching
experiences. Students incorporate political, historical,
philosophical, sociological and aesthetic perspective to enhance
their pedagogical understanding and effectiveness. The
teacher as an artist immersed in the liberal arts is a prominent
focus of the Childhood Education program.
Mathematics
The
Childhood Education Program with a Mathematics Specialization
prepares teachers who can serve as elementary classroom teachers,
mathematics cluster teachers, mathematics resource teachers
and mathematics leaders in their elementary schools and districts.
There have been repeated calls by local and national mathematics
organizations for the presence in each elementary school of
a mathematics specialist. Brooklyn College provides one of
the few programs in the New York City area that prepares such
teacher specialists at the elementary school level.
Science and Environmental
Education
The
Graduate Program in Childhood Education with a specialization
in Science and Environmental Education prepares pre-service
and in-service elementary educators to be classroom teachers
or school specialists with a specialization in science education.
The aim of the Graduate Program in Elementary Science and
Environmental Education is to meet the unique needs of the
scientist-educator in the elementary school. Informed by the
National Science Education Standards of the National Research
Council for the professional development of science educators,
the program involves teachers in learning science content
using the process of inquiry throughout. Teachers will be
introduced to scientific literature, media and technological
resources that expand their science knowledge and their ability
to access further knowledge. It is anticipated that Program
graduates will be both facilitators and practitioners of lifelong
learning. The Program addresses teacher's individual needs
as learners and builds on their current knowledge of science
content, teaching and learning with the expectation that each
individual brings varying degrees of experience, professional
expertise and proficiency to the process. Students will
have constant opportunity for collegial and self-reflection
on the process of teaching and learning science. Students
will learn and use the skills of research to generate new
knowledge about science and the teaching and learning of science
in the elementary school.
Bilingual Extension
The
Graduate Program in Childhood Education with a Bilingual Education
Extension is housed within the Childhood Program in the School
of Education. This program shares common goals and philosophy
with the Childhood Program. It is, therefore, designed
to educate teachers committed to pedagogic theory and practice,
who are self-reflective, who are knowledgeable and skilled
with respect to instructional methodologies, and who can respond
to the complex educational needs of diverse student populations,
including English language learners and students with special
needs. One additional and very important focus of the Childhood
Program with an Extension in Bilingual Education is the preparation
of teachers who can teach in bilingual classrooms. The
program provides greater knowledge of the theories, strategies
and methodologies regarding teaching bilingually to English
language learners in bilingual classrooms. Participants
will be prepared to address the developmental needs of bilingual
English language learners as well as instructional needs in
both language and core content areas.
