Program Description

This program leads to a Master of Science Degree in Education and a New York State Professional Certificate in Middle Childhood Education with a specialization in mathematics (grades 5-9).  Three options of the program will be offered,  to meet the needs of the different groups of prospective graduate students it serves:  Option A (30 credits) for Applicants who hold a New York State Initial Certificate in Middle Childhood Education (Grades 5-9) or its equivalent;  Option  B (33 credits) for applicants who hold a New York State Initial Certificate in Childhood Education (grades 1- 6) or Adolescence Education (grades 7-12) or their equivalents; and Option C (46 credits) for applicants with no initial certification. For all options, the following matriculation and degree requirements apply.  (Additional requirements are listed on the next page under each of the three options.)

General Matriculation Requirements 

  • Applicants must submit scores on the Liberal Arts and Science Test (L.A.S.T.)

  • Applicants must have taken 18 credits of mathematics, including two semesters of calculus

  •  Applicants must have a minimum undergraduate scholastic index of 3.0.  A minimum scholastic index of 3.0 in graduate education courses is required to maintain matriculation. 

  • International applicants for whom English is a second language are required to pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)with a minimum score of 550.  

Students should note additional requirements found in the Graduate Bulletin in the beginning of the chapter on Education programs as well as in the chapters "Admission"  and  "Academic Standing."

General Degree Requirements

  • Students must complete the following education courses (12 credits) in the stated sequence:

  • Education 712.23T,  713.23T,  701.23T,  702.23T.    These and all other required Education courses and some Education electives require permission for registration as indicated in the Schedule of Classes

  • Students must also complete four of the following mathematics courses (12 credits), or mathematics courses approved by the program  adviser:  Mathematics 604.4T, 604.6T, 606, 606.01, 606.1,606.2, 606.3, 652 

  • Students must complete an additional 6 to 22 credits according to the option which applies to them

OPTION A (30 credits)

Additional Matriculation Requirements

  • Applicants must hold a New York State Initial Certificate in Middle Childhood Education (Grades 5-9) or its equivalent.

  • Additional Degree Requirements

  • In addition to the 12 Education credits and 12 Mathematics credits listed above, the following courses are required: Education 784.2X, and one of the following elective education courses,  or an Education course approved by the program adviser:  Education  726.1X,  726.2T, 742.1X, 744T, 751.2, 765.1, 792.2 

OPTION B  (33 credits)

Additional Matriculation Requirements

  • Students must hold a New York State Initial Certificate in Childhood Education (grades 1- 6) or Adolescence Education (grades 7-12) or their equivalents. 

Additional Degree Requirements 

In addition to the 12 Education credits and 12 Mathematics credits listed above, the following courses are required: 

  • Education 784.2X and 765.1 

  • Student teaching in grades 7-8 for those with initial certification in Childhood Education (Education 763.03 and 764.5X), or 5-6 for those with initial certification in Adolescence Education (Education 763.23).

OPTION C (46  credits)

Additional Degree Requirements

  • Students must complete Education 742T, 792.1X, 763.03T, 764.5X, 725.03X, 763.23  prior to taking other Education courses required for the degree.   Students must obtain departmental permission to register for these courses.

  • In addition to the 12 Education credits and 12 Mathematics credits listed above, the following courses are required:  Education 765.1X, 792.2X

  • Students who hold no Initial Certification, few courses in Education, but who are currently teaching  will have to be evaluated on an individual basis so course work they have already completed in Education will not be duplicated.
