Memorial Award

 

The Dorothy Geddes Memorial Award is a scholarship to be awarded to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics education at Brooklyn College.

 

The award(s) (at most 2 per year) will be given annually in an amount of $1000 to Brooklyn College undergraduate or graduate students who are pursuing studies related to teaching mathematics in elementary, middle, or secondary school.

 

Criteria include:

1.    Student must be a full-time junior or senior undergraduate or a matriculated graduate student who has completed at least 12 credits in a masters program in math education.

2.    Student must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher

3.    Student must demonstrate outstanding performance or potential in the field of teaching mathematics

 

Application should include:

1.    Two letters of recommendation supporting the application with at least one from a Brooklyn College faculty member

2.    Copy of undergraduate or graduate transcript

3.   Statement from applicant about his/her reasons for applying for this scholarship

 

This scholarship honors the memory of Professor Dorothy Geddes who taught at Brooklyn College from 1963 to 1996. She was recognized as an outstanding, inspirational “teacher of teachers.” Professor Geddes was an active member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and authored several NCTM publications.  The scholarship supports her commitment to the role of Brooklyn College in preparing teachers of mathematics K – 12.
