Ph.D. candidate, Theatre, CUNY Graduate Center; M.F.A. Performing Arts Management, Brooklyn College; B.F.A. Drama, New York University. Professor Hughes’s training and scholarship touches on many aspects of theater, as both a subject and a practice, including theater history and theory, production, and arts management. As a theater historian, her primary research focus is the relationship between spectacle and reform in America in the decades surrounding the Civil War (1830-1880). She has also published and led workshops on innovative pedagogies (e.g. role-play, communication-intensive courses, collaborative learning). As a public relations professional in the performing arts industry, Professor Hughes has worked in both commercial and non-profit settings (Brooklyn Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center Theater, City Center's Encores! series, Broadway and off-Broadway shows).

Professor Hughes’s publications include a book chapter, "Defining Faith: Theatrical Reactions to Pro-Slavery Christianity in Antebellum America," in the essay collection Interrogating America through Theatre and Performance, edited by William Demastes and Iris Smith Fischer (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007); an article, co-authored with Jill Stevenson and Mikhail Gershovich, titled "Community through Discourse: Reconceptualizing Introduction to Theatre," in Theatre Topics (March 2006); an article, “Answering the Amusement Question: Antebellum Temperance Drama and the Christian Endorsement of Leisure,” in New England Theatre Journal (2004), and a review of Richard Maxwell’s production of Henry IV, Part One (at BAM) in the May 2004 issue of Theatre Journal. With Marvin Carlson, she also edited the fifth edition of Theatre Research Resources in New York City (MESTC Publications, 2004).

In addition, Professor Hughes has presented papers, organized and chaired panels, and led workshops at conferences sponsored by the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE), American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR), American Theatre and Drama Society (ATDS), Mid-America Theatre Conference (MATC), Mid-Atlantic Popular/American Culture Association (MAP/ACA), International Society for Exploring Teaching and Learning (ISETL), and the International Congress on Medieval Studies. She has also participated in multiple conferences sponsored by the Reacting to the Past program, a pedagogy initiative based at Barnard College.mailto:hughes@brooklyn.cuny.edushapeimage_2_link_0
