Graduate Design

Design and Technical Theater (M.F.A.)
Kip Marsh, Program Head

Design is both an art and a craft. The aim of the graduate program in Design & Technical Theater is to assist the student in attaining the highest levels in these areas by offering professional training in scenic, costume, and/or lighting design, and in related subjects. The program consists, not only of the vital academic curriculum, where CADD is incorporated, but of intensive hands-on production work where what is learned in the classroom environment is applied to the real world of theater. Students design department productions (which include four Mainstage and up to six flexible theater productions each year). Advanced students are given the opportunity to design at other venues in New York City. Students are recommended for projects with professional designers and theater companies during the summer and, when possible, during the academic year with faculty approval.

Entrance Requirements
Enrollment is restricted to 6 new students per year in each area. Except in rare cases, each student who is admitted must have a solid undergraduate concentration in one or more of the design areas and/or a strong background in art. Computer fluency (Mac and/or PC) is highly recommended. Each applicant must present a portfolio and be interviewed by the Design faculty. The portfolio should contain selections of the student's most representative work, which need not be solely in one design area.

Training
The program requires 60 hours of course work, including four credits for a thesis project which must consist of a fully researched and rendered design for a major production. The program may be completed in two years, but a fifth semester may be necessary for completion of thesis or design projects.
Our schedule of nine to ten productions each academic year provides students in Design and Technical Theater with abundant opportunities for hands-on experience in their chosen specialties.

Finances
A variety of internships, loans, scholarships, fellowships, and graduate assistantships are available by application to the Financial Aid Office and the Graduate Studies Office. In addition, Cerf Graduate Assistantships are available for deserving students who wish to provide service to the department’s faculty. They are awarded to first- and second-year students based on need and achievement. A number of departmental awards are also available by application after the student's first year of study.
