Graduate History and Criticism

Theater History and Criticism (M.A.)
Helen Richardson, Program Head

The MA program in Theater History and Criticism offers a variety of courses and seminars in the history of Western and Asian theater, in theories of the theater, and in applied criticism. It is a tradition of this program to stress a solid humanistic background and a structured approach in academic training, as a necessary presupposition to the proper understanding of the living theater as a cultural and sociological phenomenon. The program is also an important step toward the Ph.D. in Theater. Several graduate courses given at Brooklyn College appear in the catalog as University courses (i.e. Theater 703 and 760). These are taught by members of the Ph.D. faculty of the City University Graduate Center and are recognized for the CUNY Ph.D. Program in Theater.
