Undergraduate Program
Rose Bonczek, Program Head, BFA in Acting

The Department of Theater offers two undergraduate degrees, the BA degree in Theater, and the BFA degree.
Each concentration is designed for a full four-year course of study that encompasses intensive classes in acting, design, and theater arts training. Students in both programs are required to enroll in Brooklyn College’s nationally known Core Curriculum as part of their studies in the liberal arts and sciences.

The BA degree in Theater provides a comprehensive program of courses designed to give the student information and experience in all aspects of theater–acting, directing, costume, lighting and scene design, technical production, theater history, stage management, and theater management.

The BFA degree offers pre-professional specialization either in acting or in design and technical production. Candidates for the BFA in acting concentration are required to audition and to complete an application form and essay. This 61-credit major offers intensive courses in Stanislavsky-based acting, Alexander technique, voice production, diction and dialects, solo performance, stage combat and theater history. It culminates in the senior year with an acting showcase presented in Manhattan to agents and casting industry professionals. BFA acting students have specific semesters dedicated to investigating the works of Shakespeare, Chekhov, Ibsen, Strindberg, Williams, Miller, O’Neill, and various contemporary playwrights. The BFA in design and technical production requires candidates to interview with the program head, Professor Kip Marsh, and present their portfolio and other pertinent materials at the time of the interview. This 66-credit major offers specialized courses in stagecraft, costume, lighting, and set design, CADD programming, theater history, and a series of independent studies in which BFA design students serve as assistant designers or design department productions. BFA design students are provided significant hands-on experience in all aspects of theater through participation in each semester’s department productions.Bio%20Bonczek.htmlshapeimage_2_link_0
