The MA Theater History & Criticism program encourages a comprehensive understanding of the theater as a lively cultural, sociological phenomenon in continual transformation, and characterized by a diversity of form and content in the theatre of the past, as well as theatre in the present age of globalization.

The program offers a multi-faceted approach to academic training and investigation that fosters theatre scholars, theoreticians, and critics, including a variety of courses and seminars in the history of world theatre, in theories of the theater, and in applied criticism. The program is also an important step toward the PhD in Theater with many courses given at Brooklyn College applicable to the CUNY PhD program in Theater, upon acceptance into their PhD program. Collaboration with the various theater disciplines helps to develop a dynamic discourse on the art of theatre.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Deadline: February 1
(January 1 for international students)

Applicants must offer proof of extensive knowledge of the field (at least 18 credits in theater required), including one course in both dramatic literature and theater production and one year (or two courses) in theater history.

Applications to be sent to Graduate Admissions must include a letter of intent, three letters of recommendation, transcripts from all previous schools attended, and copies of two research papers on theatre or related subjects, which demonstrate strong writing and research skills. A duplicate copy of the completed application (including all supplemental materials) should also be sent directly to the Program Head to facilitate the process.

PROGRAM OF STUDY

Each MA History student plans an individual course of study and must complete at least 30 semester hours of course work. The total number of hours includes a written thesis, completed under the guidance of the Program Head. All theses must be prepared on a standard IBM compatible or Macintosh word processing program, and submitted both in hard copy and properly labeled disk form.
