MORA, MAGDALENA (19521981)
Faced
with hardship, the class struggle and discrimination throughout her
life, Mora found inspiration in the activism of the United Farm Workers
and the Chicano movements. Mora joined the Mexican American Youth Organization
(MAYO) in high school and el Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán
(MEChA) at the University of California, Berkeley. She advocated for
community issues and supported Berkeleys anti-war movement. Participating
in the national leadership of CASAHermandad General de Trabajadores
(CASA-HGT), Mora wrote a column for their newspaper, Sin Fronteras.
While she helped women at the Tolteca Food Plant organize a strike,
she studied political economy, labor history and Mexican women. Moras
life served to inspire others. A book, Raíz fuerte que no
se arranca, a corrido and a UCLA scholarship pay homage to Moras
achievements.
