Applying to the Brooklyn College SEEK Program

SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge) is a higher education opportunity program found at each of the senior colleges of the City University of New York. The SEEK Program provides special academic, financial and counseling assistance to students entering college for the first time. The program provides services to help students succeed in the college setting.

The Creation and Purpose of SEEK

SEEK was created in 1966 when the New York State Legislature enacted a law that mandated the creation of programs providing access and support for New York City residents and sought to advance the cause of equality and educational opportunity of the City University of New York. Today, the university maintains a commitment to admit students under the provisions of this law and accept students who normally would not qualify through regular admissions criteria.

Who is Eligible?

Prospective students must meet the following criteria for admission into the SEEK Program:
  1. Have a high school diploma and less than an 80 high school average or a New York State high school equivalency diploma or its equivalent from other states. (A limited number with averages above 80 may be permitted entry into the program.)
  2. Have resided in New York State for at least one (1) year prior to application.
  3. Be citizens of the United States, or have permanent resident status.
  4. Have not previously attended an institution of post-secondary education, except in the case of veterans who are permitted up to 18 credits earned during or prior to their tour of duty in the armed forces.
  5. Have a gross family income in the qualifying range.
Application to the Brooklyn College SEEK Program is made by completing a freshman application for admission to the college including the SEEK section, item 17, found on page 2 of the CUNY application.
