SEEK Department - Course Descriptions

PreCore 0.11 - Textual Analysis I

Intensive study and practice of reading skills; emphasis on fluency of reading, close analysis of written texts, and techniques of critical inquiry; systematic instruction in college-level vocabulary and comprehension strategies for understanding standard written English.

Pre-Core 0.12 - Textual Analysis II

Continuation of Textual Analysis I; continued practice and refinement of comprehension strategies; techniques of critical inquiry used for understanding written English; emphasis on organizational patterns, academic vocabulary and study skills

Pre-Core 0.13 - Written Textual Analysis I

Intensive study and practice of writing skills; emphasis on fluency and the use of organizational patterns in writing; systematic instruction in the vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and spelling of standard written English.

Pre-Core 0.14 - Written Textual Analysis II

Continuation of Written Textual Analysis I; continuous practice in writing essays with emphasis on clarity, focus, and organization; systematic instruction in, and intensive review of, the vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and spelling of standard written English.

Pre-Core 0.15 - Oral Textual Analysis I

This course is designed to develop skills which will strengthen effective oral communication. Specifically, the course is based on the study of communication theory as applied to a variety of public speaking situations and social interactions. All class activities - both written and oral - and all assigned and collateral readings are directed to improve students' communication skills. The readings for this course will be drawn from the texts assigned in Pre-Core 0.11 and Pre-Core 0.13. Critical inquiry strategies of formulating questions will be used in preparing student presentations.

Pre-Core 0.16 - Oral Textual Analysis II

This course is designed to continue the development of oral communication skills. Specifically, this course is based on the study of communication theory as applied to a variety of public speaking situations and social interactions. All class activities - both written and oral - and all assigned and collateral readings are directed to develop and refine fundamental communication skills. Readings for the class will draw on those materials required by instructors in Pre-Core 0.12 and Pre-Core 0.14. Students should make a point of using Core-related materials, topics and themes to enhance their presentations. Critical inquiry strategies of annotating to formulate questions and to discern rhetorical structure will be required of every reading assignment. Student generated questions will form the basis of small group discussions.

DES 0.3 - Counseling Workshop

Introduction and orientation to college and school policies and procedures. Special emphasis on developing clear understanding regarding the curriculum requirements. Students are instructed in the use of the library's resources; in development of study techniques and in selection of a major. Placement must be approved by the Department of Educational Services.

DES 0.4 - Career Workshop

Designed to introduce the student to the world of work, educational and career planning sources of occupational and training information, and techniques of assessing the student's own vocational interests, abilities and values. Students will study thoroughly at lease four occupations relevant to their interests and complete an educational plan that is consistent with college requirements and their standard goals. Placement must be approved by the Department of Edcucational Services.

Math 2.91 - Pre-calculus Mathematics A

Preparation for calculus with more introductory material than Mathematics 2.9. Mathematics 2.91 and 2.92 constitute a two-term sequence for students who are not prepared for Mathematics 2.9 or who wish a review. Real numbers. Complex numbers. Graphs. Functions, especially linear and quadratic functions. Polynomials and rational functions. Trigonometry. (Not open to students who are enrolled in or have completed Mathematics 2.9 or any mathematics course numbered 3 or higher.)

Math 2.92 - Pre-calculus Mathematics B

Continuation of Mathematics 2.91. More extensive study of functions; composition of functions, nverse functions. Logarithmic and exponential functions; Trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions. Conic sections. Binomial Theorem. (Not open to students who are enrolled in or have completed Mathematics 2.9 or any mathematics course numbered 3 or higher).
