ENG 59 Contemporary London Theatre Survey

instructor: david p. mckay

Since its beginnings in the sixteenth century, London theatre has regularly been provocative, topical, and always entertaining. This course will offer students a survey of the contemporary theatre scene in London, and discuss ways in which the plays respond to the contemporary English cultural and political climate. The syllabus for this course will be entirely dictated by the summer season in London and will include serious drama, comedy, and perhaps musical theatre. We will see many of the texts that we consider in performance, and we will be discussing the central issues of these plays, the ways in which they relate to contemporary British culture, and the transition of these texts from page to stage. Students will be encouraged to think about theatrical productions they see, and to interact with the texts using literary criticism, performance analaysis, and an awareness of topical issues.
