Tell me about your ideas for K-12 curriculum.
Colleagues in the Brooklyn College School of Education are identifying teachers we work with in the Brooklyn Schools, as well as our student teachers who would like to be a part of this work. We are creating a format somewhat similar to that of the NEH, Gilda Lerhrman Institution of American History, American Social History Project, National Council of History Educators professional development seminars, with scholars providing content and curriculum specialists providing resources. We plan on having four meetings, the last being in July 2010 where the teachers present and critique their curriculum, and then we post in on the web. We also have to create assessments strategies to see which curricula has been helpful, which are used, which ones were not useful. We still need to create a mechanism to determine feedback on the seminars, materials and invited scholars and speakers. Finally, and as always we need to find ways to raise grant money for future curriculum development.
